El casto José (fragment)
In this fragment of a larger work, which represents the biblical scene known as “The Chaste Joseph and the wife of Potiphar”, we see the young Joseph with his arms raised in an attitude of rejecting Potiphar’s wife and turning his head so as not to see her nakedness while he begins a flight movement that the woman tries to hold back by clinging to her cloak. This canvas is cut in half, not being able to recognize more traces of the composition. It may be a sketch for the painting of the same subject that belonged to Dr. Félix Schlayer, in which the complete composition can be seen, with the naked woman on the bed: A.A.V.V.: Instituto Gómez-Moreno (catalog).
