Sibyl Samia

Zurbarán School
Óleo sobre tabla

Female figure is walking, dressed in whimsical cloak and turban crown with feathers, holding a star. In the background, low horizon landscape and the Holy Family in the Bethlehem Portal. The personage represented is identified with the Sibyl Samia, foreteller of the Manger, of the own Portal of Bethlehem. María Elena Gómez-Moreno attributed this painting to Alonso Cano, but this possibility did not have much repercussion and recently it has been more fortunately linked to the School of Zurbarán. Acquired in Granada by Manuel Gómez-Moreno. / Extracted from: A.A.V.V.: Instituto Gómez-Moreno (catalog). Granada, 1992, p. 129.
